Servicing the Park Cities Area
Park Cities is the common term used when discussing the two communities Highland Park and University Park. Highland Park is bordered on the South, East and West of Dallas and on the North by University Park.
The area of Highland Park was originally part of a 426 acre plot of land given to Dr. John Cole in 1843 by the Republic of Texas. By the early 1900’s the area of Highland Park and Turtle Creek had been acquired by several different developers including Colonel Henry Exall who created Lake Exall by damming Turtle Creek and John S. Armstrong who began development of residential communities and parks. After a financial setback, Colonel Exall farmed and raised horses in this area he named “lomo alto” or high land. By 1913 Highland Park was voted by its residents to be incorporated. Today Highland Park is only 2.2 square miles and with fewer than 9,000 people in population.
The history of University Park began as a handful of homes surrounding the then young Southern Methodist University which supplied the homes with utilities until 1924 when it had become too costly to continue to provide such services. In response, the homeowners wanted to be annexed into the town of Highland Park but were denied on the same grounds SMU had given. It was then decided that the homeowners would be incorporated as their own town which was approved through a community vote. When first incorporated the town made up 380 homes and 1,200 residents. Since 1940 to present day University Park has remained around 22,000 in population and 3.8 square miles.
