Richmond, TX: The Cattle Empire
Richmond sits on the Brazos River fifteen miles southwest of Houston. The city’s transportation links include U.S. highways 90A and 59, the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. A log fort was built at the bend in the Brazos River becoming the basis of the “Fort Settlement”. The area was then bought by partners Robert Eden Handy and William Lusk and named after Richmond, England. In 1837 Fort Bend County was formed and Richmond became the seat of government. In 1851 the courthouse was built, along with a couple of stores, a church, and a school.
Before the Civil War Richmond became a center of the “cattle empire” that grew between the Brazos and Colorado rivers. Cattle were branded on ranges and then sent north to market centers in the Midwest. The town began to flourish in 1855 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway created a stop in town allowing the cotton shipping business and cotton markets to prosper. A cotton warehouse was built along with two hotels for visitors. However, in 1878 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway extended its tracks bypassing Richmond leading into a new, rival community called Rosenberg just three miles away.
Population began to suffer due to emerging towns nearby. In 1893, a steel bridge was built over the Brazos River. The Richmond economy depended on agriculture until the 1920s when oil production began. Despite hard times, history remained in Richmond attracting visitors today to locations such as: the 1883 John Moore Home, the Long-Smith Cottage, the McFarlane Visitors Center, the historic county courthouse, many historic homes, a Confederate Museum, and the Fort Bend Historical Museum.
