Ticks Can Transmit a Number of Serious Diseases

ticksTicks Can Enter Homes by Hiding In Pets’ Fur

Like many other kinds of insidious pests, ticks require mammalian blood in order to survive. Ticks are often tiny, and even when engorged with blood are often the size of sunflower seeds; this means that ticks can remain undetected for extended periods, particularly if they happen to afflict your pets.

Ticks usually prefer areas with lots of overgrown vegetation, so be sure to keep your lawn well maintained if you intend to cut down their numbers this summer. While it may be common practice to inspect your body and clothing closely after traversing areas with heavy foliage, ticks often find their way onto humans and inside homes by hitching rides on pets.

Like many other kinds of insects, ticks will usually seek out areas that provide some kind of shelter, even inside homes. When they’re not latched onto humans or pets, they can be found in cracks and crevices and nestled within the fibers of carpets. It’s also worth noting that ticks often infest rodent and bird nesting areas, so be sure to exercise extreme caution if attempting to remove them yourself.

ticksWhile they may look similar to the casual observer, fleas and ticks require different treatment methods, and if you suspect that one or the other has made inroads into your home, call your pest control professional right away. He or she will not only be able to accurately identify the pest in question, but will recommend the more efficient and cost-effective treatment method.

Even if the chances of infection are low, it’s important to be aware of the different diseases that ticks carry, in order to be prepared should the worst occur. The most common disease carried by ticks is Lyme disease. This disease is characterized by an inflamed read ring around the afflicted area, as well as joint and muscle pain, and fever. While Lyme disease may be the most common, ticks can transmit a number of equally dangerous diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, and Tularemia.

As warm weather approaches, it’s important to be aware of the ways in which you can avoid tick bites while enjoying the outdoors. For example, wear long-sleeve shirts and pants if hiking or walking through the woods, and choose lighter colors which will allow you to spot ticks easier against the fabric. Also, wear hats and keep long hair tucked underneath to avoid ticks getting tangled and hiding on your person.

Fleas Can Lay Eggs in Inconspicuous Places

fleasOutdoor Pets Can Exacerbate Flea Infestations

When the weather begins to warm in the spring and summer, all manner of outdoor pests will become more active. Unfortunately, this also includes fleas, which generally experience a period of inactivity during the winter.

Like bedbugs, these parasites require mammalian blood in order to survive. In most cases, humans will pick up fleas from their pets, who may contact them from running around outdoors. Fleas can then be easily transferred from pet to owner, and then to any number of places inside the home.

Indeed, fleas are famously tenacious pests, and can transfer to a human host from a different pest that’s been trapped and removed. For example, if you successfully trap or kill a mouse or raccoon that’s been skulking around your property, any fleas that it may be carrying may be forced to find a different host, which may end up being pets or their owners.

Despite their size, flea bites can potentially be very dangerous. While they more often than not only result in numerous red, swollen, and itchy bumps, these pests can occasionally transmit a number of serious diseases. Most famously, fleas are responsible for the spread of the black plague in Europe during the 14th century; illnesses like murine typhus, tungiansis, and tularemia are also among those carried by fleas in North America.

fleasSince fleas are minuscule pests, it’s important to be aware of other signs of flea activity. For example, pets scratching themselves abnormally frequently may be an indication of a flea infestation. The sudden presence of the telltale red, itchy bites it also another.

Additionally, be on the lookout for what’s commonly referred to as “flea dirt;” that is, flea feces which resembles ground black pepper, and may be spotted in pet bedding, carpets, and rugs.

It’s also important to keep in mind that flea infestations can begin and spread very quickly. Fleas hide their miniscule eggs in the fibers of carpets, clothing, and put fur, and can therefore be quite difficult to detect. Accordingly, it’s vital that you contact your local pest control professional if you even suspect that fleas may have entered your home.

fleasIn the meantime, and in an effort to keep fleas from laying eggs in the first place, be sure to wash your pet’s bedding frequently, and sweep and mop tile or wooden floors—especially where the floor meets the baseboard.

Exercise Comprehensive Exclusion Methods to Keep Mice Out

miceMice Can Easily Spread Diseases and Parasites

House mice are common and often quite dangerous pests that can be found throughout North America. Mice can be found both in cites and in rural areas, and they’re sure to be found wherever human’s throw out food.

Mice are extremely adaptable pests mainly because they eat a wide variety of food, including seeds, grains, grubs and worms, and dry foods that humans may be storing.

Mice like to hide in quiet, out of the way places like attics, basements, and crawlspaces. In the winter, mice will be desperate to find warmth and food, and they’ll often manage to wrangle their way into your home to get it. Once mice are inside your home, they have the potential to cause health problems for your family and to damage furniture, wiring, and walls.

Like beavers, mice must keep gnawing constantly to keep their teeth from growing out of control. This leads to ever-growing damage to furniture and storage boxes, and anywhere in which mice suspect there may be food. There are also many documented cases of house fires caused by mice chewing through wiring.

miceWhen mice establish themselves inside homes, they’ll often make their nests as close to sources of food as possible. Areas like kitchens and pantries are particularly likely to harbor these pests.

In order to combat these pests, it’s important to clean these areas thoroughly to keep them free from crumbs and spills. If possible, keep pet food sealed and stored, and make sure that any opened food is kept in bags or tight-fitting Tupperware.

Another reason why mice are particularly tricky pests to get rid of is that they breed incredibly quickly. Once they’ve successfully established themselves in your home, and once they have sufficient access to food and water, these pests will immediately begin to procreate.

The gestation period of mice is usually around twenty days, and they can have up to twelve pups in a litter. The typical female can give birth up to ten times a year, which means that mouse populations can grow exponentially and can actually get out of hand alarmingly fast.

miceWith so many mice in one place, they have an amazing propensity to spread diseases like hantavirus and parasites like fleas. Since mice are attracted to food sources, the likes of which are stored in your kitchen, it’s not uncommon for mice to spread disease simply by traversing cooking surfaces and simply depositing bacteria as they move.

Cantu Pest Control is proud to be the first company in Texas to offer a Cantu Green Service Service. Our Texas mouse control experts are excited to offer Cantu Green Service pest services to our customers in search of a more prevention-based solution to their pest removal and on-going pest management needs while minimizing the use of pesticides.

Cockroaches Can Slip Indoors Through Tiny Cracks and Crevices

cockroachesCockroaches Crave Food, Water, and Warmth

Although cockroaches are associated with uncleanliness and squalor, they can enter any home in search of food, water, and warmth. These pests can fit through even the smallest cracks and crevices, and are often inadvertently transported indoors by humans. With plenty of resources and a marked lack of natural predators, human habitations are the ideal breeding grounds for cockroaches, and they can remain hidden yet thriving all year round.

Cockroaches are nocturnal pests, so even if they have established themselves in your home, you may not notice them until they’ve had plenty of opportunity to breed. Cockroaches prefer to live and breed in quiet, out of the way places like basements, crawlspaces, and even inside the cavities of walls, so even when they forage for food at night, they may remain hidden from even the most vigilant homeowner.

Cockroaches are particularly noteworthy pests because of their tendency to carry and transmit dangerous pathogens and may, in fact, exacerbate allergies. Since cockroach populations are constantly drawn to food, the kitchen is particularly at risk of become a breeding ground for cockroach-borne bacteria. Cleanliness is a vital aspect of cockroach control, and it’s extremely important to keep your kitchen, and your home in general, free from crumbs and spills.

cockroachesThere are a number of commercially available traps and baits that may help to mitigate termite infestations. Since cockroaches often enter homes through even the smallest cracks and exterior crevices, you may consider caulking gaps in tiles and concrete through which these pests may be entering your home.

Once these pests establish themselves inside your home, there are a few key signs of their presence. Molted cockroach skins and their egg shells are particularly noticeable, as are their fecal matter. Checking any traps on a frequent basis will also cut down cockroach numbers, and will also give you an idea of the location from which these pests are entering your home.

cockroachesIn a general sense, you can also take some outdoor precautions to lessen the chances of cockroaches entering your home. Make sure to maintain your lawn diligently, at least to the extent that long grass is cut down and there’s no obvious buildup of vegetation. Removing these conspicuous hiding places around the outside of your home will ensure that cockroaches won’t be tempted to make the short traversal from your lawn to your home.

rats

Identification and Sanitation Are Key Aspects of Rat Control

ratsKeep Both Indoor and Outdoor Spaces Clean to Avoid Infestations

Roof rats and Norway rats are extremely common pests that can be found in every region throughout the United States. Although these different species have very similar behaviors and will still enter your home in search of food, water, and warmth, the Norway rat tends to be slightly larger and bulkier than roof rats, and generally have lighter brownish fur, as opposed to the roof rat’s black fur.

Despite the subtle different in appearance, both of these species are remarkable adaptable pests and can live—and breed—on almost any kind of food. During the winter, when food is at its most scarce, these rats will sometimes try to enter your home and establish a nest in a dark, quiet place. Rats are mostly nocturnal, so while they’re sleeping during the day, they’ll come out at night, while the rest of the household is asleep, and scavenge for food.

rats

Since rats will be most active when everyone else is asleep, they may be able to go undetected in your home for a long time. There are, however, a number of telltale signs that a homeowner should look out for if they suspect that rats have made a nest somewhere inside their home. Rat dropping, which are small, oblong, and dark in color, are perhaps the most obvious.

Also, stay on the lookout for walls and furniture that have been gnawed. Rats’ teeth grow constantly, which means that they have to keep chewing basically anything they come into contact with so that they can keep them under control. Oil marks are often another good sign of the presence of rats. When rats frequently traverse a particular area in search of food, they’ll leave oil and grease deposits from their fur on any surface that they brush against. These markings will often be a darker in color and will likely be close to walls and baseboards.

ratsWhen dealing with a rat infestation, identification and sanitation are the first two critical components. There are a number of measures a homeowner can take to discourage rats from entering their home in the first place.

While keeping all food in sealed containers and cleaning up crumbs are important, it’s also an equally good idea to clean up debris around your yard. Rats love to hide under piles or wood or accumulated piles of leaves, and they can also use overgrows trees and bushes to climb up and enter your attic from above.

cockroaches

Cockroaches Seek Out Water, Warmth, and Moisture

cockroachesCockroach Exclusion Can Mitigate Risk of Infestation

One of the most effective means of cockroach control and prevention is maintaining sanitary conditions in and around your home. While cockroaches are primarily drawn to warmth, moisture, and shelter, particularly during the winter months, ensuring that your home is clean and free of any materials that may prove to be food for cockroaches is certainly and important precaution.

In fact, sanitation is so important that many roach-removal programs will likely fail if you neglect this important aspect. While some control and extermination methods, such as spraying pesticide and setting bait traps, might go part of the way towards fighting a cockroach infestation, these pests are ubiquitous and tenacious, not to mention that they can breed extremely quickly. Even a few cockroaches, if given access to food and water, can lead to infestation that can get wildly out of hand.

cockroachesCockroaches are also attracted to moisture, and will seek out anywhere inside your home where moisture tends to collect, like kitchens, basements, and bathrooms. Kitchens in particular are a critical area to keep clean, as there’s both plenty of food and water to sustain a large number of these pests right under a homeowner’s nose.

During the winter, cockroaches may find their way inside your home through even the tiniest cracks and crevices in search of food and water. While it may not be possible to seal off every conceivable opening, maintaining the integrity of your pipes and faucets can go a long way towards heading off a cockroach problem before it begins. For example, placing wet dishrags directly in the dryer or washing machine, or plugging the drains of sinks or bathtubs before you go to sleep at night will help to eliminate enticing water sources.

cockroaches

Another problem facing homeowners when it comes to eliminating cockroaches is the fact that these pests mostly remain dormant during the day, and they’re most active (and visible) at night while the household is asleep. However, by systematically eliminating potential hiding spots, you’ll be able to flush out these pests or, better yet, mitigate the risk of an infestation all together.

Roaches love to hide in cracks and crevices in furniture and walls, which you can easily seal up with a simple caulking gun. Homeowners also often neglect to make sure that windows are firmly closed and secured, which it one of the most obvious and yet overlooked ways in which pests can enter your home from outside.

mice

Mice Can Damage Walls and Furniture with Ceaseless Gnawing

miceWinter is a critical time for pest control, because there are a variety of pests that will be looking to enter your home in search of food and shelter, including rats and mice. These pests live in all parts of the country, and will try to find a quiet, out of the way area in your home to make their nest.

Mice are mainly nocturnal, which means that once they establish a nest inside your home, they’ll dash out at night, unnoticed, and return to their nests before morning. As a result, actually establishing that you’ve got a mouse infestation on your hands can be trickier that you might think.

What’s more, mice can squeeze in through even the tiniest cracks, and will often take advantage of holes in external-facing screens and vents. They are also excellent climbers, and will take advantage of overgrown trees or bushes that may be touching your house to climb up to your roof.

There are a few key warning signs that may indicate the presence of mice in your home. These include droppings left behind, evidence of gnawed furniture or boxes, and grease marks on walls and floor which indicate the paths that these pests frequently travel.

miceMice carry a variety of diseases, and their potential to cause damage can be exacerbated when they traverse kitchens and food preparation areas in particular. Countertops and pantries are often rife with crumbs, which attract mice and puts them in prime position to deposit dangerous microbes which may be consumed by humans.

It’s also important to remember that they must constantly be gnawing in order to keep the growth of their teeth to a manageable level, so depending on how many mice are present in your home at a given time, it’s possible that they’ll cause significant damage to storage boxes, walls, furniture, PVC pipes, and wires; there are even many documented cases of house fires being caused by electrical malfunctions from mice chewing through wires.

rats

Roof Rats Can Cause Damage and Spread Disease

ratsRoof Rats Menace Homeowners, Even in Winter

Roof rats can be one of the more dangerous and damaging pests to find in your home, both because of their ability to carry diseases and the constant gnawing they inflict on walls and furniture. The first step to combatting a rat infestation is to correctly identify the rodent in question. Roof rats have black or brown fur and long scaly tails.

Occasionally these pests can grow to be quite large and even reach sizes over 40 centimeters long. However, these pests are generally longer and sleeker that their cousins, the Norway rat, and have large ears and a pointed nose.

These tenacious pests build their nests in the upper areas of buildings, which explains their name. Roof rats are excellent climbers are also highly adaptable, which means that they can be equally at home in the corner of an attic as inside a wall.

ratsRoof rats are generally nocturnal and will often build their nests as close to a reliable food source as possible, meaning that areas around the kitchen should be the first to undergo an inspection when searching for roof rat nests. These rats are omnivorous pests, which aids in their adaptability, as they can east and digest virtually anything that’s close at hand.

Since roof rats are nocturnal, it’s possible that you may not notice any signs of an infestation until after it’s gotten out of hand. However, rat droppings are certainly a telltale sign that a number of rats might be hiding within your home.

These droppings are usually about 12 to 13 millimeters long and dark in color. Another sign that you should be on the lookout for is grease smudges along walls and baseboards which indicate frequently-traversed rat pathways. These paths may lead back to a nest, which are commonly constructed from insulation, wood shavings, and other similar materials.

Roof rats have a propensity for carrying a variety of diseases, which can be easily transmitted to human beings, particularly if these pests frequently travel through food preparation areas like countertops and pantries. Bubonic plague was a historically devastating illness initially transmitted by rats and fleas, but diseases like hantavirus and trichinosis are still reported frequently throughout the United States every year.

ratsTo prevent these pests from gaining a foothold in your home in the first place, it’s important to make sure that all vents and windows are properly sealed, as roof rats have been known to squeeze through cracks no more than a quarter-inch in diameter in their search for food.

cockroaches

Cockroaches Can Infest Any Home, Regardless of Cleanliness

cockroachesCockroaches Seek Out Moisture and Warmth

Cockroaches are extremely adaptable insects and can be found in most regions throughout the world. These pests tend to live among all kinds of lawn detritus like rotting logs, leaf litter, and beneath piles of rotting and matted vegetation. Some species of cockroach have the ability to withstand extremely low temperatures while others can thrive in arid environments with limited access to water.

Cockroaches are most active at night when the scavenge for food, water, and mates. Most species of cockroach in the United States prefer moist environments and relatively high humidity. Occasionally, these pests will find their way inside human habitations, in which case they’ll eat whatever they come into contact with. These insects have remarkably generalized diets and have been known to feed on such diverse foodstuffs as cheese, leather, starch from book bindings, glue, hair, dead skin flakes, and dead animals and plant material.

cockroaches

Cockroaches like to hide out in cracks and crevices which provide them sense of warmth and moisture, which means that they generally make incursions into homes during the winter months in order to find more hospitable shelter. Although popular culture dictates that cockroach infestations are the result of particularly unhygienic households, that’s usually not the case. Cockroaches are drawn more to warmth and moisture, and will have no problem finding accommodations in the average, reasonably clean household.

A thorough inspection is the key to successful cockroach removal. Some important signs of infestation are molted cockroach skins and egg shells. Leaving sticky traps and checking them of a frequent basis will help to cut down on out of control cockroach populations. Many species of cockroaches can be eliminated with sprays, baits, and dusts. Likewise, some exclusion techniques like caulking cracks and crevices that may serve as entry points for cockroaches. Residual insecticides can also be effective to slowly but surely control cockroach populations. This method can be particularly effective for extensive indoor infestations.

cockroachesUsing a number of exclusion and extermination methods in tandem will often be your best option when it comes to controlling cockroach infestations. It’s also a good idea to keep lawns and flowerbeds well maintained in order to cut down on the number of potential cockroach hiding places.

opossums

Opossums Can Thrive In Even the Most Inhospitable Regions

opossumsOpossums Will Settle Wherever Food is Readily Available

Depending upon the species, opossums can range in size from large house cats to small mice. Most species are semi-arboreal omnivores, which, in practical terms, means that they’ll eat almost anything. Much like mice and rats, opossums are among the most successful vermin on earth, thanks largely to their unspecialized biology, flexible diet, and breeding habits. They can survive, and often thrive, in even the most diverse locations and climates.

Opossums have remarkably well-developed immune systems, and many species exhibit partial or total immunity to the venom of rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and other vipers. Interestingly, opossums are about eight times less likely than wild dogs to carry rabies.

They are generally solitary creatures, and are known to stay in one area as long as food and water are readily available. Primarily nocturnal, opossums prefer quiet, secure areas to sleep during the day, and will sometimes seek out ready-made burrows for a form of temporary shelter.

opossumsPerhaps the most notable behavior of the opossums, however, is its unique ability to play dead—or possum—as the old idiom goes. When an opossum is threatened or harmed, it will involuntarily mimic the appearance and smell of a corpse.

When this hard-wired defense mechanism takes effect, its lips will be drawn back, saliva will foam from the mouth, the eyes close or roll back, and a foul-smelling liquid is secreted from the anal glands.

Though this behavior is apparently effective against would-be predators, the animal is, for all intents and purposes, completely defenseless during this period, and can be poked, rolled over, and even carried away without eliciting a response.

The opossum will typically regain consciousness within forty minutes, although the process can sometimes take up to four hours. In conjunction with their ability to play dead, adult opossums will growl deeply or hiss at a perceived threat.

opossumsOpossums can be found in most regions throughout North America, though are considered invasive species in Southern Ontario and British Colombia. They are considered pests because of their tendency to dig up gardens in search of berries and nuts, and, like raccoons, will almost inevitably root through outdoor garbage cans in the hopes of coming across discarded food.

Cantu Pest Control cares about safe and humane trapping of the wildlife that has invaded your home or business. We believe that wildlife invaders do not have to be killed in order to solve the invasion. After our opossum removal professionals have properly and thoroughly employed measures that will eliminate future wildlife infestation then the property owner may choose to have any wildlife in and around the property caught in humane traps.
